El Nuevo Campo

2709 E Lake St

El Nuevo Campo is a temporary public space project, designed to activate a currently vacant lot over the next 3-4 years. This site has historically been an important community gathering place, previously as the home to the Oddfellows Hall and more recently as El Nuevo Rodeo music venue and La Raza Radio, until the loss of the building in 2020.

Thanks to significant investment from Lake Street Lift and the property owner, as well as support from a partnership of organizations including the Lake Street Council and Redesign, Inc., the space contains temporary landscaping improvements, a shaded plaza with outdoor furniture, temporary lighting, a youth-sized soccer field, and public art.

The space is free to use for the public, and can be reserved (for a fee) for private events along with the accompanying event supply trailer!

FUTURE USE

Viva Apartments rendering

Long term, the property will be rebuilt as Viva Apartments, a new mixed-use transit-oriented development on the site of the former Oddfellows building. The 6-7 story development hopes to include nearly 100 units of affordable housing, with a generous number of multi-bedroom units, as well as 6,000 square feet of commercial space. The building will feature sustainable and energy-efficient design elements. The property will invite local artists to contribute to murals and other works for display, the surrounding grounds will "green up" with native landscaping and tree canopy to complement the courtyard common area.

This project was made possible by funding from the State of Minnesota and the City of Minneapolis as a part of Lake Street Lift. Programming administered by the property owner with support from the Lake Street Council.
