Longfellow

Named after the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the neighborhood of Longfellow is saturated with art and storytelling. LOLA and Curiosity Studio are sites of collaborative imagination and exploration; and through the Clay Pit and the Toolbox Collective, community members gather to create, build, and share skills and resources. Cloudland Theater and Mill City Music bring neighbors together over music, and at the Trylon, one of the cornerstones of independent cinema in the Twin Cities, screenings span Old Hollywood classics to new and locally produced documentaries (conveniently situated walking distance from dozens of local restaurants, where many Longfellow residents can be found grabbing a pre-show dinner on weekend evenings). Along Lake Street, organizations like MN350 and COPAL carry forward the neighborhood’s legacy of collective action and community care, hosting events and gathering neighbors in solidarity towards more just and healthy futures for all. In Longfellow, neighboring is a practice of revisitation, showing up for one another time and time again, over years and across geographies, from newly arrived businesses to historic bungalow houses. This is knowledge not only embodied by Longfellow residents, but through the landscape of the neighborhood itself: the trees that canopy the neighborhood, providing shade for bikers in the summer and catching snowfall in the winter; the birds and foxes that return to Brackett Park each spring; the steady hum of the Mississippi River, ever-present and ever-changing. One of the neighborhood’s largest events, the Longfellow River Gorge festival celebrates the Mississippi River and its role as a crucial lifeway for the neighborhood, the city of Minneapolis, and beyond. Each year, the festival brings new visitors to Longfellow, while also honoring the neighborhood’s deep and rich history as a steward of the river: a way of sharing the past while bringing forward new life, new connections, and new stories.
