The Wedge

One of the most densely populated neighborhoods in the city of Minneapolis, with more than 9,000 residents contained within a half square mile, the Wedge is a tightly woven and richly diverse community of residents—encompassing those deeply rooted and those in transition; long-established and highly-mobile—many of whom flock to the neighborhood for its walkability and ease of access. Every block in the neighborhood is mere minutes from the resources that make a community—from schools to pharmacies, restaurants to boutiques, bicycle repair shops to grocery stores, including the Wedge Co-op, a Minneapolis institution and a hub for community gatherings, which anchors the northernmost tip of the neighborhood. The Wedge is animated by the remarkable diversity of transit options that run through it. To its south, the Midtown Greenway carries walkers, runners, and bikers across the city. Along its western corridor, commuters gather at the Uptown Transit Station in the mornings and afternoons. Along its eastern edge, the Bryant Avenue Bicycling Boulevard, the most recent addition to the neighborhood, brings bikers of all ages through the Wedge, filling the streets with laughter and chatter. While the Wedge may be best known for the bustling commercial corridors that form its eponymous shape—the triangular neighborhood is hemmed in by Lyndale and Hennepin Avenues to the east and west, and Lake Street to the south—residents know that there is also a quiet steadiness to be found if you know where to look: in the ease of a balmy summer night in Mueller Park, the serenity of a long walk along the tree-lined side streets, the warmly lit windows of the restaurants and bars at the corner of Lake and Lyndale on a clear winter night, the quiet camaraderie of neighbors waving to each other from their porches on the first warm day in spring.
